PSEi climbs to 6,800

The local stock barometer rallied to the 6,800 level in thin trade on Wednesday on a continued mix of bargain-hunting and window-dressing activities.

The main-share Philippine Stock Exchange index gained by 188.24 points or 2.83 percent to close at 6,846.44, tracking upbeat regional markets.

Investors also took their cue from the overnight rise in US stocks to nearly record highs.

“The PSEi continued both its bargain hunting and window dressing easily on the back of thin volumes.

Aside from this, The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 11.23 points, or 0.1 percent to end at 19,945.04, according to preliminary figures, remaining just shy of the psychologically important 20,000 milestone,” said Regina Capital development managing director Luis Gerardo Limlingan.

At the local market, trading volume was scant at P3.45 billion, however, as many investors are on a long holiday break.

PSEi firms up at 6,900 level

The local stock barometer climbed back to the 6,900 level on Wednesday ahead of the closely-watched US Federal Reserve meeting, during which investors have priced in a decision to hike interest rates.

The main-share Philippine Stock Exchange index gained 47.43 points or 0.69 percent to close at 6,928.34, recouping some of the heavy losses incurred on Monday. The index has firmed up in the last two trading days.

On Wednesday, trading sentiment was mixed across regional markets as investors awaited the conclusion of the two-day Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting Wednesday night (Manila time).

“Our research team looked into 20-years worth of data to see how the PSEi performed around the FOMC meeting,” BPI Securities president Michaelangelo Oyson said.

Oyson said there was usually slightly positive movement on the PSEi the day after the Fed rate hike. “That is, the data indicate that the market generally prices in the rate hike ahead of time,” Oyson said. “Rate hike or no rate hike, it’s slightly positive on the market.”

All counters firmed up on Wednesday, led by the holding firms and mining/oil counters which both rose by over 1 percent.

Air Asia unit in PH eyes IPO in 2017

Kuala Lumpur—Philippines Air Asia could accelerate plans for its initial public offering (IPO) given improving business prospects, Malaysian tycoon Tony Fernandes said last Friday.

Fernandes, group CEO of budget airline giant Air Asia Berhad, told visiting Filipino journalists that the IPO of its domestic affiliate, originally seen in 2018, could be held next year.

“I’m going to do it next year, we’re going to try,” Fernandes said.

Philippines Air Asia originally planned to raise about $200 million via an equity offering, but Fernandes said it was possible to raise “maybe more” than that figure.

IPO and more in December

The market may now be precariously hanging from a thin branch after falling deep into negative territory. Still, it has managed to support four initial public offerings (IPO) for the year.

The latest is the ongoing IPO of pizza restaurant chain Shakey’s Pizza Asia Ventures Inc. (SPAVI), which reportedly has also been successful in its foreign offering. SPAVI is the third company controlled by the Po family to be listed after Arthaland Corp. and Century Pacific Food Inc.

The three other companies that took the IPO route to raise money from the investing public were: Golden Haven Memorial Park Inc., Cemex Holdings Inc. and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp.

Offer terms

Offered to the public at the price of P11.26 a share, SPAVI will be able to raise as much as P3.96 billion from the sale of 351.9 million common shares—104 million primary shares and 202 million secondary shares held by Arran Investment Private Ltd., a unit of GIC Private Ltd., the sovereign wealth fund of Singapore. The issue also has an over-allotment option of 45.9 million secondary shares.
The offer period started last Dec. 2 and will end on Dec. 8. Listing date has been tentatively set on Dec. 15. Of the total offered shares, 70 percent has been allocated for subscription by overseas investors while the remaining 30 percent has been set aside for local investors.

PSEi retests 6,800

The local stock barometer inched up to the 6,800 level on Tuesday as a regional upswing prevailed over initial jitters on the higher-than-expected Philippine inflation data for November.

Reversing losses in early trade, the main-share Philippine Stock Exchange index gained 29.73 points or 0.44 percent to close at 6,806.14 on selective buying of large-cap stocks.

The day’s rebound was led by the property counter, which rose by 1.42 percent while holding firms also gained.

On the other hand, the financial, industrial, services and mining/oil counters all declined

Shakey’s IPO priced at P11.26 per share

Pizza parlor chain operator Shakey’s Pizza Asia Ventures Inc. (SPAVI) priced its initial public offering (IPO) at P11.26 per share on Monday night, thus bringing the size of its stock market debut to a maximum of P3.96 billion.

Several industry sources privy to the share sale told the Inquirer that the IPO price-setting had been approved by the issuer and the arrangers on Monday evening ahead of the offering which will run from Dec. 2 to 8.

The offer price was cut from the earlier maximum price of P15.58 per share.

An investors briefing will be held in relation to this IPO on Thursday (Dec. 1).

Inaugural trading of SPAVI’s shares on the PSE is scheduled for Dec. 15. The company will trade under the ticker “PIZZA.”

SPAVI will offer 104 primary common shares and 202 million secondary common shares plus 46 million additional shares in case of excess demand.

BDO Capital & Investment Corp. and First Metro Investment Corp. are the lead underwriters for the transaction while BDO Capital is also the stabilizing agent.

Philippine Stock Market - FAQ :: Frequently Asked Questions

What are stocks?

Stocks are shares of ownership in a company. When you buy stocks of a publicly listed company, you become part owner of that company.  As a part owner, you participate in the company’s growth and future profits. Conversely, you may also lose if the company suffers a loss or performs below market expectations.

What is a stock market?

The stock market is a place where stocks are bought and sold or a place where people can invest in publicly listed companies through the Philippine Stock Exchange, Inc. (PSE).

Why invest in stocks? How do I make my money grow in the stock market?

Historical data has shown that investing in stocks over the long-term provides superior returns. Stocks offer potentially higher yields compared with fixed income instruments such as time deposits, government securities and bonds. There are three (3) rationales for stock investing:

a.    Ownership in a company

When an individual invests in the stock market, he automatically becomes a stockholder of a particular listed company. As a stockholder, he is entitled to the following benefits: a.1) voting rights; a.2) dividends to be declared by the corporation; and a.3) share of the remaining assets of the company if it is to be liquidated.

b.    Liquidity of funds

A stock market investor has  easier access to funds. Compared with banks which require high minimum conditions for deposits and credit, an individual can start an investment for as low as Php 5,000.00. He can cash in or out his funds during trading hours, through his broker.

c.    Make money

Investors in the stock market make money through dividends and capital appreciation. When a listed company declares dividends, its shareholders increase their investing power. An investor who buys into the company at a low market price and sells it at a higher price will gain capital appreciation.

What are the different dividends given by publicly listed companies?

There are two types of dividends that can be given by companies:

a.    Cash dividends - these are earnings for every share of stock declared by the company.

b.    Stock dividends - these are additional shares given to shareholders at no cost which can be sold anytime.

View historical dividends / rights declared by listed companies.

Is there any risk involved in investing?

While it is true that a stock investment is the most volatile of all securities, investors might well remember that uncertainty is a permanent feature of the investing perspective. This means that risk is always a part of any investment. A better attitude would be to limit and manage your risk. A maximum level of gain or loss should be set, and calculated decisions should be made when this level is reached.

How do I start investing in stocks? How much of my savings can be invested in stocks?

Just like an ordinary savings account, an investor has to open an account and present valid identification with a broker before he can actively trade stocks on the Exchange. An investor would need at least the minimum amount of investment to open a trading account which is Php5,000.00.

Getting started in the stock market is a simple process.

1.   Choose your stockbroker or trading participant (view Stockbroker's Directory).
2.   Open a trading account with your stockbroker of choice.
3.   Place your buy or sell order either online or through a phone call to your stockbroker.
4.   Monitor and keep track of your investments.

What is the minimum amount of initial investment?

The minimum amount of money needed to invest in the stock market depends on the minimum number of shares to be traded for the stock and the minimum amount required to open a trading account. The minimum number of shares that can be traded will be determined by the prevailing market price of a particular stock. The PSE has a Board Lot table which shows the minimum number of shares that can be bought or sold given a certain price range.

Philippine Stocks - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: REGINA ONLINE INVESTING’S TRADING PLATFORM

We live in a fast-paced world where most people would start the day with a cup of instant coffee, a race against the traffic in the metro and finally greeted with a dozen of unread email at the office. An average Filipino employee spends 40 hours a week in the workplace to earn only about P25,000 a month (based on middle income earnings).Naturally, individuals want to bring in more money but the question is, what and how can they do it with their busy schedules? The answer lies with online stock trading. Together with Regina Online Investing (ROI) you can have access to its user friendly platform that runs using PSETradex; up-to-date research and social media resources; and top of the line customer service. Philippine Stocks - HOW LIVE COACHING CAN MAKE YOU MORE MILLIONS

Philippine Stocks - HOW LIVE COACHING CAN MAKE YOU MORE MILLIONS

A famous Chinese proverb once said: “Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me and I will understand.” This can’t be truer especially when learning a new skill like playing the guitar, culinary arts, computer programming and even in stock trading. Sure you can learn these things through reading but books can only take you so far. Nothing beats hands on learning which allows an individual to directly observe and understand a certain discipline.

Giving importance on showing rather than telling, Regina Online Investing took the usual stock seminar to the next level by hosting its first Stock Market Live Coaching last Sept 16 at the Y2 Hotel. Unconventional topics discussed during trading hours includes Ticker tape reading, How to read trends and signals on a live chart, How to manage trade emotions and Why peso cost averaging is not a strategy.

But what sets apart this seminar from the others? Here’s a rundown on some of the key takeaways during the stock market live coaching:

How to read trends and signals on a live chart

One of the reasons why chart analysis has become increasingly popular among traders is because of the availability of sophisticated charting software. The easy access to internet charting has also paved the way for quick dispersal of technical information. However, not everyone can read the underlying buy and sell stock signals

GUIDE: Five tips to start investing in the Philippine stock market

Philippine Stocks :  GUIDE: Five tips to start investing in the Philippine stock market

There are several investments even an ordinary Juan can put their money into like savings accounts, pooled funds, insurance policies, and the stock market.

And with expectation that the Philippine economy would grow by seven to eight percent this year, especially with cheaper oil prices, excess cash could be used to take advantage of these investment instruments.

Out of these four, trading stocks could prove to be the one that gives you the highest returns.

But when it comes to stock trading, there is no single rulebook that will tell you what you should do or where you should invest in.

The Board Lot Table

How much is the minimum amount of investment?

Trading of stocks is done by board lot or round lot system. The Board Lot Table determines the minimum number of shares one can purchase or sell at a specific price range. Therefore, the minimum amount needed to invest in stocks varies and will depend on the market price of the security as well as its corresponding board lot.

Prices of stocks move through a scale of set price fluctuations. Prices are thus adjusted along these fluctuations at a time. Transactions which are beyond the prescribed number of maximum fluctuations from the last sale price are not allowed.

PSEi wipes out 2016 gains

The local stock barometer has wiped out all gains earlier seen in the year, sliding to the 6,800 level as US policy risk arising from Donald Trump’s election as the new president escalated aversion to most emerging markets.

The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) shed 103.61 points or 1.49 percent to close at 6,871.48 on Monday as foreign investors trimmed exposure to emerging markets.

The PSEi has now fallen below the 6,952.08 end-2015 closing level. It has likewise slid by 15.3 percent from the stock barometer’s peak level of 8,118.44 seen last July
